It was on his walk back to the park on a Thursday night in mid-November when he had the revelation. He had just walked past the church on Golden Gate and Lyon with its broken stained-glass windows and the white painted stone front. The church had a sign that said only “God Is Real”. That wasn’t the revelation by the way. I mean it could have been I guess, a lot of people have that revelation at some point, but that wasn’t it for him. It wasn’t a Paul on the road to Damascus thing. More just one of those thoughts that really lays everything going on out in the clear. The kind of thought where you float up and out of your body and everything and where you came from, where you are, and where you are going is all revealed all in that one moment.

He had just finished his cigarette and had stubbed it out on a trashcan. The early night air was a contagious kind of cold. The mist farther up Golden Gate was drifting past the trees by the University up on the hill. A car drove by slowly and right as the headlights reached him, the thought I’m talking about hit him right square in the face.
